Flavr is a free-forever dating app based on food preferences.
Overview
Full description (about your startup & solution): Flavr is a dating app built around a simple idea: users should never pay to find love, and the app should only make money when it actually works. Today's dating apps have a broken incentive structure. They profit from subscriptions, boosts, and engagement — which means the business does better the longer users stay stuck swiping, not when they actually go on a date. The result: fewer than 2% of matches ever become an in-person meeting. Flavr flips that model entirely. Matching is free forever — no subscriptions, no pay-to-play features, no swipe limits. Instead, restaurants pay Flavr a small fee, but only when a match becomes a verified, real date at their venue: $1.50 for a café, $3.00 for a bar, $5.00 for a full dine-in meal. Restaurants can also purchase optional native ad placement. The product is designed around solving the two biggest reasons a match never becomes a date: not knowing what to talk about, and not knowing where to go. Flavr matches people on food and taste compatibility, giving both sides an easy, built-in conversation starter, and uses AI (Gemini Flash) to recommend the best-fit restaurant for their date and generate personalized opening messages. From there, users can book directly through in-app links to Resy, OpenTable, or Google Maps — collapsing the gap between match and date into just a few taps. Geofenced verification ensures restaurants are only billed for dates that actually happen. This creates a flywheel that aligns Flavr's growth with real-world outcomes: more restaurant partners means better recommendations for users, which means more verified dates, which means more restaurant revenue — a loop where the platform's business model and its user experience improve together instead of competing with each other. Flavr is launching hyper-locally in Westwood, CA, targeting the dense UCLA student and young professional population.
Challenge
Dating apps have a conversion problem, not a matching problem. Fewer than 2% of matches ever turn into an actual date — because the apps make more money keeping users swiping than getting them off the app. Subscriptions and pay-to-play features reward engagement, not outcomes. Flavr fixes the incentive: it's free forever for users, and we only get paid by restaurants when a match becomes a real, verified date. We also remove the two biggest points of friction that kill a date before it happens — "what do we talk about" (solved by matching on food/taste compatibility) and "where do we go" (solved by in-app restaurant recommendations and booking handoff).
