With a novel, flexible, liquid inflation system, without explosive and unreliable pressurised cylinders, we're making water safety wearables tiny, fashionable, and as accessible as sunscreen.
Overview
We realised that everyone needs access to small, sleek, wearable devices that can become rescue tubes on demand. That way parents aren't endangering themselves by trying to rescue their kids, lifeguards have access to rescue equipment even when they're off-duty, and... We can keep going for hours about the benefits. But we also realised that if we make thick pouches like Restube (because they're constrained to metal, pressurised cylinders), social stigma will stop people from wearing them. So we developed the world's first safe, flexible, liquid inflation system that can fully wrap around an arm into a sleek armband. This way, we can make it fashionable, customisable, and not weird to wear. With a pull of a tag, it inflates and detaches from the person, remaining connected via a chord, so it literally becomes a rescue tube the user can pass on to someone else, or hold on to. The system is provisionally patented, fully novel, and covers the only chemical method to produce safe gas from safe reactants whilst remaining shelf stable. What's most fascinating is that this system isn't just useful for this application; it has applications in the aviation industry, rocketry, and aerospace generally, with unbelievably strong future prospects.
Challenge
Drowning kills around 300,000 people every year, which is more than 30 people every hour, being one of the leading causes of accidental deaths. It happens because flotation is rarely within reach when something goes wrong, and lifeguards can't be everywhere: even Australia, one of the world's most heavily patrolled nations, covers only 4% of its 11,000 beaches. This leaves lifesavers who are off-duty, parents, swimmers and athletes without equipment in the moments that matter most, which is why bystanders who jump in to help so often drown themselves; in Australia, 97% of coastal bystander rescuer deaths involved no flotation device. We believe that putting immediate flotation on people's bodies, in a form they will be happy to wear, with no social stigma, will address drowning at a scale that patrols and public equipment never could. To make it wearable, we’ve developed the world’s first flexible, chemical, safe inflation system that can take on any form. It replaces bulky, explosive, rusting CO2 cartridges. With this invention, we also resolve a pain point for the aviation and general lifejacket industries, which still rely on pressurised CO2 cartridges that count as dangerous goods and require servicing yearly due to finite shelf life - an issue our system does not suffer from.
